Continuous Passive Motion (CPM)
We are a family owned and operated independent company providing outstanding customer service to our referral sources and patients.
Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) is a treatment method designed to aid recovery after joint surgery. After extensive joint surgery, attempts at joint motion can cause pain and as a result, the patient fails to move the joint. This allows the tissue around the joint to become stiff and for scar tissue to form resulting in a joint which has limited range of motion and often may take months of physical therapy to recover that motion.
Passive range of motion moves the joint without the patient's muscles being used. Continuous Passive Motion devices are motorized machines that have been developed for patient use after surgery.
CPM machines may be used as an inpatient or in the home on an outpatient basis. By very gradually moving the joint, it is possible to significantly accelerate recovery time by decreasing soft tissue stiffness, increasing range of motion, promoting healing of joint surfaces and soft tissue, and preventing the development of adhesions (scar tissue). This is accomplished without patient effort (passively) as the machine moves a joint through a prescribed range of motion for an extended period of time. Studies have shown that patients using CPM devices require less pain medication than patients who have had the same type of surgery and are not utilizing this device.
CPM may be prescribed by Orthopaedic surgeons following total knee replacement(V43.65), anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction(844.2) tendon repair, joint manipulation under anesthesia (718.46), arthroscopic debridement of adhesions, open reduction and internal fixation (stabilization) of intra-articular fractures, rotator cuff repair, articular cartilage microfracture, and articular cartilage transplantation.
Your Physician determines how the CPM unit should be used.
This will include settings for speed, duration of usage, amount of motion, rate of increase of motion, etc.
